Phnom Penh


Approximately 800m north from the central market, the Wat Phnom, the most famous Buddhist temple (stupa) is of Phnom Penh. Not only the temple itself, but the entire system is considered among visitors and locals alike than worth seeing.

Wat Phnom is built on an approximately 27m high hill reclaimed, making it the highest religious building in the city. The circular system around which a generously landscaped roundabout located is can the character of a natural park where you relax and let your soul.

According to legend, was the wealthy widow Daun Chi (grandmother) Penh in 1372 to build the hill and build the plant after they had found five statues of Buddha on the bank. The word "Phnom" means in German "hills" and thus to that of the hill the widow with surname Penh was created, Phnom Penh, the nucleus of today's capital of the country.
On the hill a Khmer pagoda (the main pagoda), a chineseische Pagoda, an altar of grandmother Penh and a stupa of the last King Angkor Ponhear Yat can be visited.
